How Many Ounces Does A Olympic Size Swimming Pool? [Expert Review!]

Sharing is Caring

People often ask me how many ounces a swimmer’s olympic size swimming pool weighs. As a matter of fact, I have gotten so many questions about it that I actually made a quick little video to answer them all! Enjoy.

The Ounceage Is A Real Thing

Let’s get one thing clear about the Olympic pool size. It is a real thing. Back in 1964, the International Swimming Union (or ISU) defined the exact measurements of an Olympic-sized pool. According to them, the pool should be 24.8 feet long by 9.8 feet wide and have a water surface area of 5.77 acres. Those sizes actually make up one gallon of water. So yes, an Olympic-size swimming pool is exactly one gallon of water!

How Many Pounds Do You Weigh?

Before we begin, it is important to establish how much I weigh. I usually wear a size Large T-shirt, a small size Medium T-shirt, a Large hoodie, and a small pair of pants. According to Mycelium Health, an authority in the field of fitness and nutrition, a large T-shirt weighs approximately.8 ounce, a small T-shirt weighs.4 ounce, a Large hoodie weighs 2.3 ounces, and a small pair of pants weigh 1.2 ounces.

Based on my own experience, I would estimate that I weigh about 125 pounds. However, this is a variable factor because I have been heavier and lighter at various times in my life. For instance, when I was training for my masters, I weighed about 185 pounds and was carrying around a lot of extra weight around my midsection. But besides my own experience, how many ounces does a swimming pool weigh? The answer is a bit over a pound.

What Is The Exact Water Capacity Of An Olympic Pool?

Although it weighs a pound, an Olympic-size swimming pool has a lot of water in it. The exact amount of water contained in an Olympic pool is 36,000 ounces. That’s 1,860 pounds of water. So even though it weighs a pound, it can actually hold a lot more than that. Just to put this in perspective, the weight of the water in an Olympic pool is enough to fill a humongous 10-gallon jerry can. So even if you weigh a ton, you’ll still be able to fit in an Olympic-size swimming pool!

How Many Pounds Would You Weight If You Lived In An Olympic Pool?

If you had 1,860 pounds of water stored in an Olympic pool, how heavy would you weigh? The answer is:

  • 22.7 pounds
  • 23.9 pounds
  • 25.1 pounds
  • 26.5 pounds
  • 28.0 pounds

According to Mycelium Health, these are the average weights of men and women respectively working out in the water for one hour a day, five days a week. So if you are weighing more than 28 pounds now, you could probably use this as a starting point to lose some weight.

The Importance Of Reps

Every weightlifter knows that it is very important to perform repetitions or reps with an exercise. With the same mentality behind it, I would like to suggest that the same goes for swimmers. When performing reps in the pool, it is important to do them in the right manner. As a general rule of thumb, the more weight you are lifting, the more reps you should be doing. Let’s examine this further. Say, for example, you are a 150-pound male and you decide to swim 4 sets of 50 yards. That’s 1,500 yards total. Now, imagine that as a beginner, you will perform those 1,500 yards in one session and take a break of one hour before repeating the same 4 sets of 50 yards. That’s a total of 5 hours of continuous swimming. Now, let’s say that you are slightly advanced and have done some open water swimming, which is basically swimming in the ocean. In this case, your body is used to the water and the heat, so performing 4 sets of 50 yards is a bit much. In this case, you would want to do 3 sets of 25 yards with a mini-break between each set. That’s 1,500 yards total and only 5 hours of continuous swimming. So the general guideline here is: the heavier you are, the more reps you should be doing.

What Is The Best Way To Prepare For A Pool Game?

Besides just playing in the pool, there are a few specific things that you can do to get ready for a game of pool. One of the things that Mycelium Health recommends is getting in some open-water swimming. This will help prepare your body for the feeling of being in the water. Another thing that they suggest is weight training. According to them, weight training will increase your muscle strength, improve your balance while in the water, and make it easier for you to lift more water. In other words, it will make you a better swimmer!

So, In Conclusion

Hopefully, this quick little FAQ has given you enough information to answer all of your questions about the Olympic size swimming pool. Just remember that this is a real thing and it takes a lot of water to fill it up! Even if you are a small person, it can still hold a lot of water. As a matter of fact, a smaller person can fit completely submerged in the water. It’s just a matter of personal preference as to how far you want to go under!
